South Lawrence, MA : 23-year-old man killed in crash on South Lawrence Trafficway on Thursday 25th October 2018
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a man who died from a crash Thursday afternoon on the South Lawrence Trafficway.Stephan Childers, 23, a resident of Illinois, was taken to a hospital after the crash but died of his injuries, Sgt. Kristen Channel said in an email to the Journal-World Friday morning.
Channel said the investigation into the crash remained ongoing and that she did not have any new information to share.
The two-vehicle accident happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. at Kansas Highway 10 mile marker 385, between Iowa Street and East 1200 Road, which connects to Kasold Drive.
According to the sheriff’s office, Childers was driving a Toyota Camry westbound when his car — for reasons not initially known to investigators — crossed the center line and struck an eastbound tractor-trailer.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified Friday as Jamie Moss, 37, of Mayetta, Channel said. He was not hurt.
Authorities believe both men were wearing seat belts, the sheriff’s office said previously. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
There were two dogs in Childers’ car at the time of the crash, Channel said. She said both dogs were later located alive.
Childers’ vehicle, which was heavily damaged, came to rest in the grass north of the highway. After the wreck the tractor-trailer was stopped on the shoulder of the highway, upright without major damage.
