JUPITER, FL : Officer caused fatal I-95 crash after Palm Beach County chase on Thursday, 9th April, 2020
Authorities say a police officer from Broward County who had pursued a reported stolen car through Palm Beach County was at fault when his cruiser collided with a motorcycle on Interstate 95, killing the man riding it.
However, an investigation shows the motorcyclist had a blood-alcohol content 2½ times the threshold for impairment prior to the crash in southern Martin County, just north of the Jupiter border.
Lauderhill police officer Jehoshu Elioenai Newell was given a traffic citation in the Aug. 10, 2019, death of Robert Alfred “Chico” Perone, 47, of Port St. Lucie. The Palm Beach Post obtained the Florida Highway Patrol’s recently completed investigation report Thursday.
Perone’s widow, who lives in Wellington, has sued the city of Lauderhill for wrongful death in the car theft, chase, crash, fatality and arrests, which involved four different counties and numerous law-enforcement agencies.
