Butte, MT : Canadian woman dies in single-vehicle crash near Lima on Monday, December 21, 2015

A Canadian woman died in a Dillon hospital after her husband lost control of a vehicle on a snow-packed highway south of Lima on Monday, authorities said.

The woman, about 55, was traveling with her husband, 60, and their two granddaughters, ages 7 and 8, southbound on Interstate 15 when the man lost control of a Ford F-350 pickup truck and struck a guardrail, 8 miles south of Lima about 3:30 p.m., said Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Mitch Voss.

The vehicle rolled onto its passenger side, ejecting the woman from the front passenger seat, and then turned back onto its wheels and came to a rest.

The woman was transported to Barrett Hospital and Healthcare in Dillon, where she was later pronounced dead, Voss said.

The trooper said the woman had been asleep and woke up to adjust her seat belt, briefly unbuckling it. Her husband reported that he looked at her just prior to losing control of the vehicle.

The man and the two girls were wearing seat belts. They also were taken to the hospital, but their conditions were unavailable at press time.

Voss said the stretch of I-15, 9 miles north of Monida Pass, can be treacherous. At the time the man lost control of his pickup truck, snow was blowing across the roadway.

The woman was not identified pending notification of her family.
