William Hollinger, 54, of Morgantown was southbound in a pickup when the two vehicles collided head-on, spun around and then stopped at the point of impact just south of Chestnut Hill Road.

Firefighters from five different companies who responded to the scene. Rescuers had to use hydraulic tools to remove the roofs of both pickups to free the drivers.

Schlimme and Hollinger were transported to Reading Hospital. Both were listed in fair condition Tuesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Both lanes of Morgantown Road were closed at Chestnut Hill Road for about two hours while the vehicles were removed.

The accident remains under investigation.

Jeff Hartwell, 44, who lives near the scene, was outside playing basketball with his daughter. He said that he saw Schlimme's pickup truck drift more than 3 feet into the southbound lane.

“I kind of looked up because I heard rumble strips, and then I heard a boom,” Hartwell said. “It didn't look good.”

Hartwell ran to the accident. He and drivers who showed up shortly after the accident attempted to care for the two victims and keep them calm before emergency responders arrived.

Hartwell said that speeding and accidents are a constant problem on the stretch of road outside his home.
