Grantsville ,UT :Alcohol suspected in I-80 crash injuring 3 women on Saturday afternoon ,July 11th 2015
Alcohol may have been a factor in a crash that injured three women Saturday afternoon, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
At 5:16 p.m., the Pontiac Grand Am was traveling east on I-80 about 10 miles north of Grantsville when the driver drifted out of her lane and over-corrected to the left. The vehicle rolled into the median and came to a rest on its top, said UHP Sgt. Mary Kaye Lucas.
The rear passenger wasn't wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle, sustaining major injuries. She was later flown to a hospital in critical condition.
The front seat passenger was also taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, Lucas said. The driver sustained minor injuries.
Eastbound I-80 was closed for 90 minutes while responders attended to the women, all about age 20, and cleaned up the crash, Lucas said.
It was unclear how fast the car was driving, but alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash, she said.
The sergeant also cautioned motorists to take precautions on the road.
"You can see just in this crash alone, the one that wasn't restrained was hurt much worse than the two that were," Lucas said. "So obviously, wearing your seat belt and obeying the speed limit is a big thing we want to caution everybody on."
