Newport News, VA : Two adult females and a 3 year old died after an accident on Interstate 95 on Thursday, September 14, 2017

Two adult females and a 3 year old died after an accident on Interstate 95 in Sussex County on Thursday morning, officials said.

Four children also were injured in the accident, one receiving injuries considered to be life-threatening, according to a news release from Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police.

The driver of a 2009 Dodge Caravan was traveling southbound on I-95 — south of Route 301 — and ran off the roadway Thursday morning, the release said. The van struck a tree head-on. Two adult females and five children were in the van at the time of the crash, according to Anaya.

The driver, identified as Olga Mondragon Briones, died upon impact, the release said. Elizabeth Sanchez and Nelson Flores, 3, also died upon impact, the release said.

A 12 year old who was in the van was flown to the Medical College of Virginia with injuries considered to be life-threatening, according to Anaya. The other three children, ages 3, 8 and 12, were taken to the Medical College of Virginia by ambulance, the release said.

The Virginia State Police accident reconstruction team has been called to the scene to investigate, the release said.

Virginia State Police confirmed a driver died Thursday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Sussex County.

The crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. on Interstate 95 southbound, north of the 18-mile marker. Two other occupants suffered injuries not considered life-threatening, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

State police are still on scene investigating, Anaya said.
