Sacramento, CA : One person killed in four-vehicle crash on the 5 Freeway on Thursday, September 14, 2017
At least one person died this morning in a four-vehicle collision on the southbound 5 Freeway in Sun Valley, authorities said.
The crash prompted the closure of all southbound lanes on the Golden State Freeway as well as the transition road to the 170, however all lanes of the 5 Freeway are now open.
The crash was reported just after 3 a.m. on the 5 Freeway near the 170 Interchange, said California Highway Patrol Officer Elizabeth Kravig. One of the four cars involved in the crash was a sheriff's vehicle.
According to NBC4, deputies were transporting two inmates from the North County Correctional Facility when the crash occurred. Neither the deputies nor the inmates were harmed.
One person in another vehicle died at the scene, Kravig said. Information about additional injuries was not immediately available.
According to the preliminary investigation, a car became disabled and stopped, and other vehicles crashed into it, including a sheriff's department vehicle, the California Highway Patrol reported.
