NEW YORK CITY, NY : Sheboygan couple witnesses Times Square crash on May, Thursday, 18th 2017

A Sheboygan couple who was in New York City to celebrate their wedding anniversary was in Times Square Thursday morning when a car plowed into a crowd of people. Patrick and Kelly Graves said they were 40 or 50 feet away when they heard the crash that killed an 18-year-old Michigan woman.

"Our initial reaction was to go to the site of the accident and see if we could assist. We had seen four people laying on the sidewalk that were being given assistance by other pedestrians," Patrick Graves said.

Police moved them back to safety as the car caught fire.

"The vehicle started to smoke and or smolder, underneath the hood catch fire. We watched the flames come out," Patrick Graves said.

The Graves said they aren't scared for their safety in spite of what they saw.

"We're doing OK, and I'm thankful that it didn't turn out much worse," Patrick Graves said.

The couple will be back in Wisconsin on Sunday.

One pedestrian was killed in the crash. The driver of the car, a 26-year-old Navy veteran was being tested for alcohol and drugs. Richard Rojas has two prior arrests for driving while intoxicated.
