NORTH ATTLEBORO, MA : Elderly driver crashes into North Attleboro YMCA on May, Thursday, 11th 2017
North Attleboro, Massachusetts
The indoor pool area at the North Attleboro YMCA is closed until further notice after an elderly woman crashed her vehicle into the exterior of the facility on Thursday.
Lorraine C. Brunnock, 80, of Attleboro, told Officer Pamela Brown she was pulling into a parking space when her vehicle struck the outer east wall of the indoor pool area at the YMCA at 300 Elmwood St. at 10:28 a.m.
Damage was reported to the exterior of the building, and the interior wall of the pool area was pushed in about one foot, according to a police report.
Brunnock told Brown she “doesn’t know what happened.”
Witness Andrea Ambs of Foxboro told police that she saw Brunnock pull into the parking space and continue to travel into the building.
Brunnock was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro with complaints of pains in her chest from the steering wheel, police said.
Jim Downing, vice president of operations of the North Attleboro YMCA, said that upon hearing about the accident, YMCA staff called 911, secured the scene and closed the pool area.
He said a pre-school-aged swim class was in progress at the time of the accident. Chunks of concrete were found in the pool, but no injuries were reported.
He said the damage to the building and pool area is still being determined. Downing said North Attleboro Police, Fire and YMCA personnel agreed that the pool area should remain closed until the site has been inspected and cleared by a structural engineer.
A meeting is scheduled with an engineer, and the pool will remain closed until it is safe to open, Downing said.
