Orland,OR : Oregon woman killed in head-on near Orland on July, Friday 21th 2017
An Oregon woman was killed Friday morning on Interstate 5 south of Orland, when her car was hit head-on by a motorhome that crashed through the median oleanders.
At about 9:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Glenn County Road 25, a southbound 2009 Camelot motorhome towing a car trailer with a Jeep on it, suffered what the California Highway Patrol described as a “catastrophic loss of air” of the left front tire.
The driver, Gary Edward Shaffer, 78, of Porterville, was unable to control the RV, which veered from the right lane, across the left lane and median, and into the northbound lanes.
The RV crashed head-on into a 2010 Toyota Prius driven by Ann Blackham Fyfield, 58, of Portland, which was northbound at about 65 mph in the right lane.
The CHP said the Prius was pushed back 55 to 60 feet into the freeway perimeter fence. The RV crashed through that fence and into the field beyond, finally stopped by a chain link fence bordering a canal.
Fyfield was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shaffer suffered a small laceration to his left leg. His two passengers, Karen Louise Shaffer, 71, and Madyn Shaffer, 14, both of Porterville, were not injured.
The CHP said the investigation is continuing. No arrests were made.
