Langley,WA : Langley skateboarder injured in collision with pickup truck on Bayview Road on October, Friday 27th 2017

A 19-year-old man was injured on Friday after he was struck by a truck while riding his skateboard in Bayview.

The extent of the man’s injuries are unclear. According to the Island County Sheriff’s office, Langley resident Alexander Zeine, was hurt but transported to Providence Hospital in Everett largely as a precautionary measure.

“It sounds like he should be OK, but he did sustain injuries,” Deputy Grant Walker said.

The collision occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon on Bayview Road near the intersection of Howard Road, behind The Goose Grocer. The skateboarder was southbound on Bayview when he was hit by a black 2005 GMC pickup truck. The pickup, driven by Clinton resident Duane Gabelein, was also southbound when the collision occurred.

According to Gabelein, the man swerved into the lane right as he was passing him.

“I was driving down the road on my way home from a job in Mount Vernon,” Gabelein said. “As I come down the road, he’s swerving in and out down the street and suddenly I hit him.”

“He swerved out in front of my car right as I was passing him,” Gabelein added. “Of course, I’m shaken.”

The possibility of just such an accident on Bayview Road is a regular concern for Gabelein. The road sees a lot of pedestrian traffic in between Sunlight Beach and The Goose Grocer, with skateboarders, cyclists and people traveling by foot having to stay within the narrow road shoulder.

The incident closed both lanes of traffic for at least an hour.
