Greeley, CO : Gill man involved in crash with Weld deputy dies from injuries on U.S. 85 and Weld County on Tuesday afternoon, Nov 17, 2015
The man involved in a crash with a Weld County Sheriff’s Office deputy Tuesday afternoon died from his injuries early Wednesday, according to the Weld County Coroner’s Office.
The driver was identified as Jose Mercado Nova, 74, of Gill. Nova initially survived the crash and was taken by ambulance to North Colorado Medical Center. He was pronounced dead about 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The deputy involved in the crash also was identified Wednesday as Tim Boxley, 46. Boxley sustained moderate injuries in the crash and also was taken to NCMC for treatment. He has since been released and is recovering at his home, said Cpl. Matt Turner, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.
The crash occurred about 3:40 p.m. Tuesday at U.S. 85 and Weld County Road 66, about one mile north of Greeley. Weld 66 also is known as AA Street.
Nova was stopped at a stop sign at Weld 66 and then entered the intersection, failing to yield to Boxley, who was driving north on U.S. 85 in a marked SUV — a Ford Explorer.
Boxley struck the driver’s side of Nova’s Nissan Altima. Both cars sustained severe front-end damage in the crash.
Boxley was assigned to a call at the time of the crash, Turner said. Although he didn’t have specific information about the type of call, Turner said Boxley was not rushing to a scene under lights and siren.
Additional details about the crash were not available Wednesday as the Colorado State Patrol had not yet completed its investigation, said agency spokeswoman Trooper Alisha Danko.
Nova marks the 55th fatality on Weld County roads in 2015. By this time last year, there also were 55 traffic deaths.
