Kewaskum, WI : Kewaskum reeling after crash kills 2 high school students on Wednesday morning, June 18, 2014
The sudden deaths of two Kewaskum High School students in a car crash has left students, staff and residents reeling in the close-knit town of about 3,000 people.
"I think our community is a bit in shock," Kewaskum School District superintendent Jim Smasal said.
Travis Trapp, 16, of Cascade and Brent Schultz, 16, of Kewaskum were killed Wednesday morning in the crash, which involved a Washington County sheriff's office squad car in the Town of Kewaskum.
The teens were in a 2004 Ford Taurus that was westbound on Highway H near Oak Road at about 8:40 a.m. when it crossed the center and collided with the eastbound squad car, according to a preliminary investigation from the Wisconsin State Highway Patrol.
The squad car was driven by Jesse L. Williams, 35, of Kewaskum, according to a report issued Thursday by the State Patrol. Williams was treated for minor injuries at St. Joseph Hospital in the Town of Polk.
Rain and wet road conditions might have played a role in the crash, authorities said.
Trapp would have been a senior this fall; Schultz would have been a junior. Both were involved in the school's Kewaskum FFA Education in Agriculture club and trap shooting.
"They were friendly, gregarious, genuinely nice boys that came from great families," Smasal said.
Both teens were well-known and well-liked, said Tess Olson, Trapp's English teacher.
"It's clear that it was a pretty big group of people who cared about them," she said. "It's a small town. Everybody knows everyone."
Trapp, who also participated in football this year, lived on a local farm where he was known to milk cows at 4 a.m. before coming to school.
"He was super fun and nice," Olson added. "He would joke around and help you with anything."
Ashley Munk, a friend of Schultz's, was in disbelief at the loss of her classmate on Thursday.
"It doesn't feel real," she said. "He could make anyone laugh. Brent was a good kid. He didn't deserve this."
Five counselors were available for students and community members at the Kewaskum High School cafeteria on Thursday, and they will return to the school from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Summer school in the district continued Thursday as scheduled, Smasal said.
"We are trying to reach out to anybody who has any questions or is trying to seek someplace to share their thoughts," Smasal said.
Two years ago, a horrific SUV crash killed three high school girls in nearby Campbellsport, about five miles from Kewaskum.
