TAUNTON, MA : Pedestrian in stable condition following Myles Standish crash on Tuesday, 27th March 2018
A 48-year-old Taunton woman was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital with a head injury after being struck by an SUV while walking in the Myles Standish Industrial Park Tuesday morning, police said.
It was the third serious crash in the industrial park in the past six months. The other two involved fatalities and one of the other crashes also involved a pedestrian.
In both of those previous crashes — in September and November — drivers have been cited for motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, officials said.
The most recent crash occurred at 7:23 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, on Industrial Park Road in the industrial park, Taunton Police Lt. Paul Roderick said.
A preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian, Michelle Rebelo, of Taunton, was taking a morning walk, walking east on the shoulder of Industrial Park Road toward Bay Street when she was struck by a 2011 Kia SUV driven by Justin Severino, 35, of Taunton, who was also traveling east on Industrial Park Road, Roderick said.
According to Severino, someone driving an Explorer cut him off and when he swerved to avoid hitting that vehicle, he hit the pedestrian, Roderick said.
Severino said he didn’t see Rebelo on the shoulder of the road because the sun was in his eyes just at that moment, Roderick said.
When Severino felt the impact he pulled over, Roderick said.
Severino jumped out of his vehicle and pulled Rebelo out of the roadway and stayed on the scene, Roderick said.
Rebelo, who suffered a head injury, was taken to Morton Hospital and then taken via medical helicopter to a Boston hospital, police said.
She is in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon, according to a press release from the Taunton Police Department.
The crash is under investigation by the Taunton Police Department and it has not yet been determined whether any citations will be issued, Roderick said.
