Scranton, PA : Investigation into wreck on Sunday, June 25, 2017
City police continue to investigate a crash that claimed the life of a young girl Sunday and left her mother and sister seriously injured.
The 8-year-old girl who died in the two-vehicle crash on the McDade Expressway was identified as Andrea Nicole Morales of Scranton, Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland said Monday.
The crash occurred about 3:30 p.m. on the overpass above Court Street, between the North Main and Keyser avenue exits. Andrea died about a half hour later at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Rowland said.
Emergency medical personnel also took the girl’s mother, Linette Villa, 28, who was driving one of the vehicles, to GCMC. She is still there in critical condition, hospital spokeswoman Denise Rader said.
Paramedics airlifted the other passenger in the car, Gilianys Morales, 6, to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. There is no further information on her condition, Rader said.
The other driver did not suffer injuries, police said.
City police are performing accident reconstruction work and mechanical inspections of the vehicles involved as part of an investigation into the cause of the collision, which will take some time to complete, city Police Chief Carl Graziano said.
The family lived at Village Park Apartments, located not far from where the crash occurred Sunday and a short distance from the North Main Avenue exit.
People there expressed sadness, shock and sympathy at what happened on Sunday.
The people who live there are tight-knit and many of the children in the neighborhood play together, Miguel Afanador said at the apartments Monday night.
“It’s terrible,” he said. “My heart goes out to those who lost their child.”
