A 52-year-old Discovery Bay man was killed in a four-car collision on a Highway 4 overpass Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The multivehicle collision was reported at 3:15 p.m. at the eastbound Highway 4 onramp at Sand Creek Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Brandon Correia said.
Responding emergency personnel discovered four wrecked vehicles and one man trapped inside his white Ford Fusion, Correia said. The motorist was found unconscious and unresponsive in a vehicle that was leaking fuel.
The Discovery Bay man was pronounced dead at 3:51 p.m. at the scene of the crash. He has not been identified by police.
The driver of a white Dodge truck collided into the rear of the Fusion. The impact caused the Fusion to crash into the back of a Ford Explorer, then into the back of another Ford SUV.
A stretch of Highway 4 reopened at 5:57 p.m. after CHP temporarily blocked it while they investigated the scene of the fatal crash. Traffic was diverted at Sand Creek Road for an unknown amount of time.
The cause of the collision in under investigation, Correia said. The drivers of the other vehicles have not been identified. Police said alcohol or drugs did not play a role in the crash.
