Hopkinsville, KY : Teenage student injured when their bus drove off the road and hit a tree on Highway 109 in Christian County on Tuesday morning, March 10, 2015

An early morning bus ride became frightening for some kids in southern Kentucky on Tuesday when their bus drove off the road and hit a tree.

"Your mind is racing," said Christian County parent Christy Fischer. "You don't know what's going on. Could my child be injured?"

Fischer said her sons shot her a picture of the bus they were on after it crashed into a tree.

"I immediately texted my son to ask if he was OK, and he texted back and said they had wrecked," said Fischer. "We had fire trucks, ambulances, everything passing us as we went into town.

On Highway 109, pools of water filled the deep tire tracks while pieces of the bus stuck out of the mud.

"It scared you because that could've been a real tragedy," said Fischer.

Kentucky State Police said bus driver Christa Buckner exited onto the right shoulder of the roadway, overcorrected and crashed into a tree.

Fischer said both of her sons were fine and were driven by a new bus to school. KSP officials said one student was taken to the hospital with complaints of leg pain.

"I feel for the parents whose child was injured," said Fischer. "I'd hate to have gotten that call."

Christian County Schools officials said there have not been previous problems with the bus driver.

"She does not have a history of suspensions with our school system," said schools spokesperson Heather Lancaster. "However, it is standard protocol that we do an investigation, and the employee is on suspension with pay pending the outcome of the investigation."
