Warrenton, VA : Warrenton driver in fatal Gainesville crash on February, Monday 12th 2018

A Warrenton man who police say fled after a Monday morning car crash that killed his back-seat passenger has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, drunken driving and hit-and-run causing death.

The single-vehicle wreck happened at 2:42 a.m. at the intersection of James Madison Highway and Thoroughfare Road in Gainesville.

Police say a 2001 Toyota 4-Runner was traveling northbound on James Madison Highway when the driver lost control, veered off the road and rolled.

The driver fled the scene before officers arrived, said Prince William police Sgt. Jonathan Perok.

A backseat passenger, identified as 38-year-old Jose Nelvin Romero Maldonado of Warrenton, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, Perok said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A front-seat passenger, identified by police as a 30-year-old Warrenton man, was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries, said Perok. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and has since been released.

A Prince William County police K-9 and helicopter from Fairfax County Police responded to search for the driver, who was not immediately found.

Around 1 p.m. Monday, Vicente Martir Vides Vasquez, 21, of the 300 block of Jackson Street in Warrenton, was found walking along a roadway, Perok said. He was not injured.
