Texas City,TX : 1 dead, another badly hurt in causeway head-on collision on February, Saturday 10th 2018

A man died and a woman remains in critical condition after what appeared to be a head-on car collision on the Galveston Causeway early Saturday, police said.

The man, 21, was a Houston resident. Police are not releasing his identity until they have notified his next of kin.

A 34-year-old Alvin woman was trapped in a different car, police said. She had severe injuries and remains in critical condition, police said.

The Galveston Fire Department extracted both people from their wrecked cars, police said.

Police are investigating the accident that left both cars with front-end damage.

The accident happened about 2:45 a.m. Saturday in the outbound lanes of the causeway, but police say they don’t know whether one car was driving in the wrong direction or what caused the head-on collision, police spokesman Capt. Joshua Schirard said.

The man who died was still alive and trapped inside a Toyota Corolla when first responders arrived on the scene, police said. He died on arrival at a University of Texas Medical Branch hospital.

The woman was driving a gray Honda Element.
