PINELLAS PARK, FL : Man, 27, dies in construction accident on Thursday, December, 28th 2017
A 27-year-old Dunedin man was fatally injured at a construction site on Thursday when police said his head became trapped between a door frame and a motorized scissor lift.
The incident took place at about 10:10 a.m. during a renovation job at 6651 102nd Ave., which records show is a 13,855-square foot warehouse.
Pinellas Park police said Richard Collett was standing on top of a 14-foot scissor lift device — a wheeled machine that can lift heavy objects up and down — while operating the remote-control joystick.
Collett was directing the machine through a double-door exit out of the building, police said, when he suffered "severe trauma." He was later found by a co-worker and paramedics were called to the scene. They pronounced Collett dead.
He was an apprentice electrician who worked for Sunrise Electric of Pinellas, according to police.
His death "appears to be an accident," police said. An autopsy will be performed to determine an official cause of death. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will also conduct its own investigation.
