AUBURN, IN : Funeral date set for DeKalb High School running back who died in car crash on Friday, 2nd September 2016
A funeral date has been set for DeKalb High School football player Derek Padilla, 17, who died in a car accident Friday afternoon, that also left another DeKalb player in critical condition.
Padilla’s visitation has been set for Tuesday, September 6 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Padilla’s funeral has been set for Wednesday, September 7 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Auburn. The burial will follow the service on Wednesday at Woodlawn Cemetery.The crash occurred on Friday at 4 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 19 and County Road 40. The intersection is approximately 6 miles from DeKalb High School.
Police said Padilla was pronounced dead at the scene.
Medics performed CPR on DeKalb football player Lucas Oberkiser, 16. He was then transported to the hospital in critical condition.
A police report stated that Padilla was driving a Volkswagon Passat, traveling eastbound on CR 40. Oberkiser was in the passenger seat.
Padilla proceeded into the intersection at CR 19 in front of a Jeep Cherokee, traveling southbound.
The Cherokee hit Padilla’s car broadside, which sent Padilla’s car into a Hyundai Elantra headed northbound on CR 19.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The passengers in the Elantra were not hurt.
Padilla’s car and the Jeep Cherokee were totaled. The Elantra had minor damage.
Padilla was a star running back and starter for the DeKalb football team. Oberkiser also started for the team playing defensive tackle.
