KEARNEY, NE : Bus driver cited after crash in north Kearney that sent several middle school girls to hospitals on 56th Street on Tuesday, 1st January 2019

A bus driver was cited for following too closely after a car-bus crash Tuesday night in Kearney.

The male driver was driving a Blue Bird bus owned by Holiday Express of Grand Island east on 56th Street around 7:25 p.m. when he collided into the rear end of a Honda Civic.

According to Kearney Police Department Lt. Jason Koetters the bus was traveling east in the inside lane of the 800 block of 56th Street as the Honda, traveling in front of the bus, slowed down and was trying to make a left-hand turn.

The male bus driver failed to see the car slow down, Koetters said, and the two collided. The bus was transporting about 30 members of the Walnut Middle School girls basketball team that earlier had a game in Kearney.

Seven ambulances responded to the scene and transported 13 girls to CHI Health Good Samaritan and Kearney Regional Medical Center where they all were treated for minor injuries and released.
