Chandler, AZ : Teacher arrested after deadly crash on Saturday, December 27, 2014

A valley school teacher was arrested following a deadly crash in Chandler. Police say she was drinking and driving and according to investigators, her blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.

Authorities say Erica Kristine Flynn's BAC was .283 and the crash killed a 66-year-old grandmother.

With a black eye and cuts all over her face, Flynn, 30, was booked into jail. Police say she was driving drunk when she crashed into another car, killing Kathleen Searcy. During the collision, Flynn wasn't wearing a seat belt and hit her face on the windshield.

"Very, very violent crash," said Det. Seth Tyler of the Chandler Police Department.

Investigators say Flynn was speeding down Arizona Avenue on December 27th, traveling at 75 miles per hour when she allegedly ran a red light. Police say Searcy had a green turn signal and was turning when Flynn crashed into her.

"This was a completely avoidable traffic incident that happened and it happened because one individual decided to consume an exorbitant amount of alcohol and made the selfish decision to get into her car and drive," said Tyler.

According a web site for the Chandler Unified School District, Flynn taught at Frye Elementary School. This was her first year teaching. The district says after Flynn's arrest, she told them she won't be returning when school starts after the holiday break.

During Flynn's first court hearing, she sat in a wheelchair, her arm still in a sling. She cried as the judge noted she'd never been in trouble.

"You have no felonies, no misdemeanors, no juvenile record, not even a traffic offense that is showing up."

The judge agreed to let Flynn out on bond as she waits for trial on a second-degree murder charge.
