Bailey,NC : Wrong-way driver dies in crash on November, Saturday 11th 2017

One person was killed and another seriously injured in a head-on collision on U.S. 264 near Bailey early Saturday morning.

According to North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Fred Demuth, the patrol communication center in Raleigh began receiving calls around 12:15 a.m. about an eastbound driver in the westbound lanes near Bailey.

Demuth said he was enroute to intercept the wrong-way driver when he heard the Nash County 911 center dispatching the accident.

Kenneth Lee Randolph, 47, of Raleigh was killed when the 2004 Mazda he was driving in the wrong direction struck a 2017 Lexus head-on. Randolph was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the Lexus, Ibrahim Salama, 36, of Raleigh, was critically injured in the accident and was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Vidant personnel declined to provide an update on his status due to patient privacy laws.

The accident occurred a little over a mile west of the Nash County/Wilson County line. The Bailey Fire Department and Nash County EMS responded.

Demuth said both drivers were wearing their seatbelts. It is unknown why Randolph was traveling in the wrong lanes or at what point his vehicle began traveling west in the eastbound lanes.

The westbound lanes were closed until just after 3 a.m. while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
