Charlotte, NC : Driver charged with DWI in wreck that shut Providence Road on Thursday morning, January 29, 2015
Charlotte, North Carolina
A driver is charged with DWI after crashing into a power pole and closing a section of Providence road in south Charlotte on Thursday morning.
Officials say the 5100 block of Providence Road, south of Fairview Road and across from the Levine Jewish Community Center, was shut down indefinitely in both directions.
The two outbound lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m.
Police say 21-year-old Stephen Guice was driving a 2005 Honda Accord around 3:25 a.m. when he lost control, ran off the right side of the road, and struck a power pole. The car hit a retaining wall of a neighborhood entrance on Pine Tree Drive before spinning into the road and flipping over.
Guice was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Main by Medic in critical condition. Officials say both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
More than a dozen residents in the area were without power.
No word on when crews expect to have the inbound lanes of Providence Road back open.
