ORANGE COUNTY, FL : 17-year-old Melanie Luque died and her brother injured in vehicle crash on Tuesday December 8 2015
Sunday marked two years since a teenage girl and her brother were struck by a vehicle while biking home on a busy Orange County road.
Melanie Luque, 17, died and her brother, Travis Luque Esposito, 18, was injured when they were hit on East Colonial Drive.
Their mother, Tina Exposito, is speaking out, upset about the woman who Florida Highway Patrol troopers said was behind the wheel and took off, leaving the siblings on the road without calling for help.
Kila Holland pleaded no contest to the charges and is set for sentencing next month.
She faces up to 35 years in prison.
The victim’s family said they want closure, but they’re concerned they may not get it right away.
Ms. Holland, in a new twist, has requested the court for a continuance. On the basis of this continuance is her alleged pregnancy,” said Bryan Crews of Crews-Crews & Pasquera, P.A.
It wasn’t in the court filings, but attorneys said Holland is seeking a one year and two month delay.
My daughter never had a second chance at life. Had (Holland) called 911, maybe this story would have been a little bit different,” said Tina Exposito.
Exposito said her son has permanent brain damage, and trouble breathing and walking.
She said she wants closure so she can rebuild her life and bring justice for her daughter who she misses, especially around the holidays.
Everything from her giggles, her presence, her laugh, and this is our favorite season,” Exposito said.
