A 41-year-old Fairgrove woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash in the rural Thumb township.
Deputies from the Tuscola County Sheriff's Office responded at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, June 26, to the intersection of Bradford and Darbee roads, where they found two cars overturned in a water-filled ditch.
A 52-year-old Bay City woman driving a four-door Hyundai sedan westbound on Darbee Road failed to yield at the intersection, crashing into the passenger side of a four-door Chevrolet sedan driven by a 41-year-old woman, said Undersheriff Glen Skrent. An 18-year-old woman was seated in the passenger side of the Chevrolet.
The impact caused both vehicles to overturn into a large, water-filled ditch at the northwest corner of the intersection, said Skrent. The 41-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are waiting 24 hours to release the identity of the woman, who was the mother to the 18-year-old passenger.
The 52-year-old Bay City woman and the 18-year-old Chevrolet passenger were airlifted to Covenant Healthcare hospital in Saginaw. Skrent said there were rumors on social media that the 18-year-old had also died, but he confirmed that she was recovering at the hospital.
Alcohol isn't believed to be a factor in the crash, Skrent said. An investigation and autopsy continued today, June 27.
The Darbee-Bradford intersection has a yield sign, as opposed to a stop sign, Skrent said.
"There aren't too many yield signs out there, but there are in that area," he said.
Michigan State Police, Mobile Medical Response, Reese Fire Department and the Akron and Fairgrove Fire Department assisted at the scene.
A few hours earlier Sunday, in Bay County's Pinconning Township, a pickup truck ran a stop sign, colliding into a 1984 Chevrolet Corvette. A husband and wife in the sports car were both pronounced dead at the scene.
