HARDINSBURG, KY : 8-year-old Breckinridge County boy killed in hit-and-run accident in the 12000 block of Highway 259 South on Saturday, 13th July 2019

An 8-year-old Breckinridge County boy was killed Saturday in a hit-and-run accident.

Kentucky State Police responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian call just after 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the 12000 block of Highway 259 South.Police said an SUV was traveling north on the highway when the driver hit an 8-year-old who was getting mail from the mailbox on the side of the road.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His shoes were thrown off on him and he was left lying there like a dog in the street," said Denny Childers.

It's a sight that still bring her to tears.

"I just thought it was another dog. I didn't know it was that baby," said Childers.

The driver, Bradley Mattingly, 35, of Leitchfield, fled the scene of the collision and was located less than 13 minutes after the accident by a trooper who was heading to the scene.
