Kittanning, PA : Two people injured in a multi-vehicle accident on Route 422 in Kittanning Township on Friday afternoon, March 6, 2015
A multiple-vehicle crash that involved an overturned coal truck shut down a portion of Route 422 in Armstrong County Friday afternoon.
The accident happened shortly after 2 p.m. near Graham Road in Kittanning.
According to police, John Forte, 31, of Tarentum, who was driving the coal truck, lost control for an unknown reason while heading eastbound on Route 422.
The coal truck rolled on its side and hit two other vehicles.
The driver of the first vehicle, Abby Thornbury, 34, of Slippery Rock, and her unidentified passenger were flown from the scene to Allegheny General Hospital with serious injuries, authorities said.
The driver of the second vehicle hit, 49-year-old Pamela Singer, of Hollidaysburg, was transported with minor injuries.
Forte suffered minor injuries as well.
Both lanes of Route 422 in the area reopened around 8:15 p.m. after being closed for approximately five hours.
State police in Kittanning continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
