MATTOON, IL : Collision injures pedestrian in Star Auto Sales parking lot in Mattoon on Tuesday, 28th January, 2020

Icy road conditions led to a vehicle striking and injuring a pedestrian Tuesday morning in the parking lot of Star Auto Sales in Mattoon.

A Mattoon Police Department press release reported that the collision occurred shortly before 8 a.m. as a Jeep driven by a 17-year-old male was traveling west in the 500 block of Piatt Avenue was approaching the curve at North Sixth Street.

The driver reportedly began to apply his brakes, but slid on the ice. The Jeep then slid into the parking lot of Star Auto Sales, 516 Piatt Ave., where this vehicle struck a 34-year-old male who was standing in the lot. The Jeep also crashed into a parked sport utility vehicle in the lot after striking the pedestrian.

Deputy Chief Sam Gaines said emergency responders reported that the pedestrian was "alert and oriented" when his condition was evaluated at the scene. The Mithcell-Jerdan Ambulance Serve took him to the hospital for further evaluation. The crash report for this collision was still in the process of completion.
