Shawnee County, KS : Man crashes into ravine off Interstate 70 near Valencia road on Sunday, June 5, 2016
A man is in stable condition after driving off the side of the highway and into a ravine between the east and westbound lanes on Interstate 70 near the Valencia Road exit in western Shawnee County.
The single-vehicle crash involving a four-door VW was reported at 2:40 p.m. Sunday.
The driver, William Selesky, 42, of Bolivar, Calif., was driving eastbound when he hit the median and crashed into the ravine, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log. The incident may have been a result of a medical condition. Selesky was the only occupant in the vehicle.
Emergency crews used a rope system to pull Selesky up the side of the incline, Kansas Highway Patrol trooper Jacob Moomau said on the scene. About 3:20 p.m., he was pulled out of the ravine and onto the median area of the highway. He was then moved to an AMR ambulance with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Dover fire captain Nathan Rewerts said the pulley system, which was attached to a truck parked in the median, “worked great.” The car was about 40 feet below the roadway, he estimated.
The crash log indicated that Selesky was wearing a seat belt.
Emergency vehicles were parked in the east and westbound lanes, reducing traffic to one lane in both directions. East and westbound traffic was slowed in the immediate vicinity of the incident.
