Camarillo, CA : Man arrested after Ventura County deputy struck by car, killed during traffic stop on US 101 freeway in Camarillo on Tuesday, October 28, 2014
A 25-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for investigation of manslaughter, drunken driving and other charges after authorities say he ran down a veteran sheriff's deputy who had pulled over another motorist.
Sheriff's Sgt. Eugene Kostiuchenko was hit at about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, moments after he had completed the traffic stop and was returning to his patrol car parked on the side of the U.S. 101 freeway in Camarillo.
The driver who hit him fled but crashed his vehicle after a brief pursuit, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department reported. He was identified as Kevin Hogrefe, 25, of Camarillo.
In addition to drunken driving and manslaughter, Capt. Don Aguilar said Hogrefe was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death. He was in jail Tuesday on $100,000 bail and it was not immediately known if he had retained an attorney.
Kostiuchenko, 41, was an 11-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department and the married father of two sons.
Two other deputies who had stopped to assist Kostiuchenko with the original stop were almost struck by Hogrefe's passing car, sheriff's officials said.
