Hammond, IN : Hammond Emergency Management Agency vehicle struck on Interstate 80-94 near the Cline Avenue exit on Saturday, February 21, 2015

A Hammond Emergency Management Agency vehicle was hit early Saturday while assisting troopers with lane closures of Interstate 80/94 following a two semi-truck crash.

Scott DeAngelo, 43, of Hammond, was assisting with lane closures near the Cline Avenue exit and had his 1992 Ford Crown Victoria's emergency lights activated. He also placed traffic cones to block lanes in the area.

As Ruth Scheihing, 43, of Chesterton, approached the closed lanes while driving a 2010 Honda Civic, she hit the rear of DeAngelo's car, police said. DeAngelo, who was standing outside his car, jumped over a concrete median barrier wall for safety and was not injured.

Scheihing was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and proof of financial responsibility.

The crash DeAngelo was assisting Indiana State Police with happened at 12:07 a.m. Saturday as Kevin Greenlaw, 43, of Bolingbrook, Ill., entered the right westbound lane of I-80, according to the release.

Greenlaw was driving a 2006 Freightliner and had been on the shoulder of the road while a service truck removed his disabled trailer.

Zivojin Lukic, 55, of Elk Grove, Ill., hit the rear of Greenlaw's Freightliner causing his 2004 Volvo semi-truck to jackknife across all the westbound lanes, according to a news release.

Lukic was carrying diesel fuel tanks, which spread about 300 feet from the crash scene, troopers said. The spewed diesel caused a fire, but the blaze put itself out.

Greenlaw was taken to Community Hospital in Munster for non-life threatening injuries, police said. Lukic, who was not injured, was cited for speeding too fast to avoid a collision.

Indiana State Police closed down all lanes until 4 a.m.
