Polk City,FL : Polk City man killed in 2-vehicle crash on March, Saturday 17th 2018
Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a fatal crash involving two vehicles Saturday at 5:21 a.m. on Commonwealth Ave. (SR 33) at Van Fleet Road, near Polk City.
Jeffrey Felts, 60, of Polk City, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, Trenton Knight, 20, of Polk City, was treated and released for minor injuries. There were no other people involved.
According to the preliminary report, Knight was driving in a 2001 Dodge pickup, and heading north on Commonwealth Avenue. Felts was southbound in a 2000 Chevy Lumina. Evidence at the scene indicates that Knight’s vehicle crossed the center line, and struck the left front part of Felt’s car. The impact caused Knight’s truck to catch fire. Both men were wearing their seat belts.
At this time, excessive speed, impairment and distraction do not appear to be factors in the crash, but Knight indicated to investigators that he was traveling home from Tampa and was tired.
Any charges are pending completion of the investigation, which is ongoing.
Commonwealth Avenue was closed in both directions for about 5 hours during the investigation and vehicle removal.
