A pileup on an East County freeway offramp left one person dead Tuesday afternoon.

At least three vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction series of collisions, which occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. on the exit from eastbound Interstate 8 to West Main Street in El Cajon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatally injured victim was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were immediately reported.

The wreck left several traffic lanes blocked and prompted the CHP to issue a congestion alert for the area.
