Chesterton, IN : East Chicago man dies in crash on I-94 in Lake County on Monday, January 30, 2017

An East Chicago man was killed on Monday when he crashed into an overpass support column on I-80/94 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

The victim has been identified as Jerry Armstrong, 53.
According to police, at 7:30 p.m. Armstrong was exiting from westbound I-80/94 onto Cline Ave. when his 2002 Chevrolet Astro minivan struck a large round column supporting the Cline Ave. overpass.

Armstrong, the vehicle’s sole occupant, came to rest in the minivan’s back seat and had to be extricated, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Indiana Department of Transportation subsequently inspected the support column and found it to be structurally intact, police said.
