MENDHAM TWP, NJ : 28-year-old Bergenfield man killed in Mendham Twp. crash on Wednesday, December, 13th 2017
At 28-year-old Bergenfield man was killed Wednesday morning after his van crashed into the side of a tanker truck, Mendham Township Police said.
The collision, which pinned the van underneath the tanker, crushed the front of the vehicle, killing the driver, Anthony Echeverry, 28, of Bergenfield.
Echeverry, the sole occupant of the van, was pronounced dead at the scene.
At about 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, police responded with the Mendham Township Fire and First Aid and Mendham Borough Fire to the intersection of Route 24 Mendham Road West and Roxiticus Road for a reported serious motor vehicle crash.
Sgt. Brian Herchick and Patrolman Robert Kalweit responded and found a van with its passenger heavily entrapped underneath a tractor trailer tanker truck, police said.
They determined the van had been traveling west on Route 24 and struck the side of the truck, which was turning off Roxiticus Road.
The driver of the tractor trailer did not sustain serious injuries and none of the tanker’s contents leaked in the collision, police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
Chester Police and Fire Morristown Fire, Atlantic Health’s Medical Intensive Care Unit, Morris County Sheriff’s Office, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Morris County Medical Examiner, and the township and county Department of Public Works all also responded to the scene.
The crash shut down access to parts of Route 24 and Roxiticus Road for most of Wednesday, causing major delays in the area.
