Providence, RI : Police officer injured, Cruiser hit by stolen vehicle near the intersection of Willard Avenue on Wednesday, April 20, 2016

A Providence Police officer was sent to the hospital following a crash just after 9 pm on Wednesday.

It happened near the intersection of Willard Avenue and Eddy Street. Police say the officer was sideswiped by a stolen vehicle that was trying to evade police.

Firefighters had to extricate the injured officer from his car. He was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening neck and back injuries

Police say the officer saw the stolen vehicle but lost sight of it, so he parked his cruiser, which is when the stolen car sideswiped him and drove away before hitting another car.

A man identified as Stephano Black was arrested at the scene of the second crash. He is facing charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, and leaving the scene of an accident.
