A Racine County sheriff's deputy was honoredA Racine County sheriff's deputy was honored Thursday after rescuing the driver a car that crashed through a fence and severed a major gas line.
"Some people will go in and get them, and some people won't. The people that will are heroes man. I owe you everything," said Erik Wirtz, the father of the victim
Wirtz found out Racine County sheriff's Lt. David Kinservik was going to be honored for saving his daughter's life, he wanted to be there.
On Memorial Day, Vada Wirtz was driving drunk on state Highway 20 and Honey Creek Road in Waterford and crashed through the fence of a We Energies junction station, the Racine County Sheriff's Office said.
"I parked my squad sideways so no one else could come down the road," Kinservik said.
Kinservik knew he had to act quickly because a gas line was broken. He found Vada Wirtz was unconscious and had to pull her to safety.
"Her feet were on the driver's side floorboard, and her head was on the passenger side floorboard," Kinsservik said.
Her parents rushed to the scene not knowing what to expect.
"I just saw her in the back of the ambulance, and I threw the phone," said Terry Wirtz, Vada's mother.
Vada Wirtz's injuries are visible. Her parents said they are thankful they get a chance to help their daughter after some bad decisions.
