MEMPHIS, TN : Off-duty officer hit by truck, killed on New Covington Pike on Tuesday, January 24th 2017
Memphis Police Department said an off-duty officer was hit by a truck and killed near the intersection of New Covington Pike and Singleton Parkway.
MPD identified the victim as 50-year-old Chester Anderson.
The crash happened in front of Methodist North Hospital. MPD said Anderson was walking about 100 feet away from the crosswalk when he was hit by a GMC pick-up truck.
“Me and the guy [truck driver] were sitting at the light together, and when I turned in I just heard ‘pow,’” witness Frank Allen said.
Memphis Police Department said the driver of the truck stayed on the scene of the crash and will not face charges.
Employees across the street at Burger King said Anderson was on his way to Burger King when the crash happened. They said he came to the restaurant every morning; he lived nearby.
Investigators said he was walking roughly 100 feet from a crosswalk when he was hit.
“He risks his life every day, but to end it that way is sad,” Chenoa Motyen said.
Lance Pounds, who lives nearby, said he is praying for Anderson’s family.
“We need more police out here and the way it is now, we don't need to lose any,” Pounds said. “I hope they [Anderson's friends and family] will be OK. I pray for them.”
MPD said Anderson began his career with the department in August 1998 and was assigned to the Crump Station.
