Salinas, CA : Two drivers killed in Hummer crash outside Salinas on Friday morning, June 17, 2016
Two drivers died in a crash Friday morning at the intersection of Highway 183 and Cooper Road, between Salinas and Castroville.
"We believe alcohol was a factor in this collision," California Highway Patrol officer Oscar Loza said.
Fabian Sanchez III, 30, of Salinas, was driving a Hummer H2 southbound on Highway 183 at 4 a.m. when he swerved across the double yellow dividing line and sideswiped a Mercury Saber that was traveling northbound.
The Hummer then struck a Nissan Altima head-on.
The Nissan driver, identified by the CHP as 49-year-old Amanda Hernandez of Salinas, was killed on impact.
Sanchez died at a trauma center. A passenger in the Hummer, 21-year-old Maria Rios Lopez of Salinas, suffered major injuries and was transported to Natividad Medical Center.
The 19-year-old Salinas man who was driving the Mercury was not injured.
Everyone involved in the collision had been wearing seat-belts, the CHP said.
Highway 183 was shutdown between Copper Road and San Jon Road from 4 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. while officers investigated what caused the deadly collision.
