Lafayette, IN : West Lafayette man dies in a crash in Tippecanoe County on Sunday night, February 26, 2017
Unsafe speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in a Sunday night crash that killed one person, according to police.
The single-car crash was reported at 7:47 p.m. in the 5100 block of Jackson Highway.
Robert J. Pope, 39, of West Lafayette, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office.
An investigation into the crash indicates that Pope was northbound when he entered a slight left curve and drove off the right side of the road.
Pope struck a wooden fence, a steep embankment and a large wooden post. His vehicle is believed to have rolled once during the crash.
Pope was not wearing a seat belt.
