Portmouth, N.H : 20-year-old Portsmouth man dead after car crashed into a tree in Turnpike Avenue on Tuesday night, March 1, 2016

A 20-year-old Portsmouth man died early Tuesday evening after the vehicle he was driving hit a tree on Turnpike Avenue, police said.

According to Deputy Police Chief Brian Peters, at 6:38 p.m. Tuesday Portsmouth Police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Turnpike Avenue at Gorton Street.

Police said the vehicle had been heading south on Turnpike Avenue when it crossed the double yellow lines and collided with a tree on the opposite side of the roadway.

The man was transported by the Portsmouth Fire Department to St. Anne’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Deputy Peters said.

The accident remains under investigation by the Portsmouth Police accident reconstruction unit.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the deputy chief said.
