Ashland, MA : Shrewsbury man seriously injured in crash on Union Street on Monday, June 13, 2016

A Shrewsbury man was seriously injured when the car he was in crashed into a tree on Union Street on Monday, authorities said.

Cory Kays, 24, of Shrewsbury, was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after the 12:38 a.m. crash, police spokesman Lt. Richard Briggs said.

The driver of the car, Miles Wyrick, 23, of Ashland, was not injured.

Police went to Union Street after the crash was reported and found Kays and Wyrick in the car, Briggs said. Wyrick told police he had fallen asleep while driving his 2007 Toyota Corolla, which led to the crash.
“He performed field sobriety tests,” and passed them, Briggs said.

While Wyrick was not hurt, Kays suffered serious injuries although they were not considered to be life-threatening, the lieutenant said.

Wyrick has not been cited or charged, and the crash remains under investigation.
