SOUTH BEND, IN : Man critical after hit-and-run accident on Portage Road on Monday, 31st October 2016

Police are searching for a tan or creme-colored car that struck a man walking on Portage Road about 7 a.m. Monday near Cleveland Road.

John R. Jurek, 84, was listed in critical condition at Memorial Hospital with head and abdominal injuries. Police said Jurek, who was wearing a reflective vest, was struck by a northbound car. The car then allegedly stopped in a parking lot and drove off north on Portage.

The suspected car was a smaller-size car with front-end damage on the passenger side windshield and hood.

The St. Joseph County Fatal Accident Crash Team said no suspects were in custody. Police ask that anyone with information to contact South Bend Police Department at 574-235-9201.
