Woodbridge,VI : Teen charged with crashing stolen van into Stafford deputy's cruiser on April, friday 21th 2017
A Woodbridge teenager who authorities suspect was part of a trio trying to steal from cars in Stafford County early Friday was apprehended after a stolen van he was driving crashed into a deputy’s cruiser, police say.
According to Stafford Sheriff’s spokeswoman M.C. Morris Moncure, the incident began at 2:46 a.m. when a resident in the Somerset Landing subdivision called 911 to report cars being tampered with on Pinehurst Lane. The caller reported that a van with its headlights off was moving slowly down the street while two people carrying flashlights were running back and forth from the van to parked cars.
The subjects with the flashlights took off when a car alarm activated. Meanwhile, deputies were already arriving in the area.
Deputy M.R. Flick was traveling slowly through the neighborhood in search of the van, Moncure said, when he noticed a Toyota minivan traveling east on Masters Drive with its headlights off. Flick turned on his emergency lights, and the minivan spun around and headed toward Flick at a high rate of speed, police said.
The van narrowly missed Flick’s cruiser, and the deputy began pursuing it. The van increased its speed and turned onto Persevere Drive, Moncure said, where it crashed into a parked SUV, pushing the SUV about 20 feet.
The van then flipped on its side and slid head on into an oncoming cruiser. No one was seriously injured, authorities said.
The driver, identified as a 15-year-old boy whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, got out of the wrecked van and was taken into custody. Police did not find any other suspects.
The van had been stolen from the Woodbridge neighborhood where the 15-year-old lives, Moncure said.
The boy was charged with eluding police, attempted malicious wounding of a law-enforcement officer, grand larceny of a vehicle, destruction of property, trespassing and driving without a license. He was placed in the local juvenile detention center.
