Miami Beach , FL ; Miami Beach police officer injured and teen arrested after hit-and-run Crash near Seventh Street at Ocean Drive on Saturday night ,April 4th 2015
A teenager has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash that injured a Miami Beach police officer.
Miami Beach police Chief Daniel Oates said Officer Eduard Alba, who was on bike patrol, pulled over a Mercedes-Benz and a BMW near Seventh Street on Ocean Drive about 10:40 p.m.
"There was some sort of tandem racing going on," Oates said.
Oates said when Alba asked for license and registration, the driver of the Mercedes took off, dragging Alba for about 250-300 feet. Surveillance video shows the Mercedes speeding southbound on Collins Avenue between Sixth and Seventh streets.
"Officer Alba suffered a serious concussion -- that he blacked out from somewhere between five or 10 minutes," Oates said.
Police said they found the Mercedes and the driver at a La Quinta hotel in Fort Lauderdale. Meshach Samuels, 18, of Brooklyn, New York, is now facing charges, included attempted premeditated murder and leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.
Alba, who has been with the department seven years, also suffered road rash. He was taken to the hospital Saturday night and released Sunday afternoon.
Oates said he spoke to Alba by telephone.
"I said that your colleagues here came through for you and this guy's under arrest, and he was absolutely thrilled to hear that," Oates said.
