Carteret County, NC : vehicle involved in deputy crash on U.S. 70 Tuesday night on June 24, 2014
A Carteret County deputy is recovering in the hospital after being injured in a wreck while responding to an emergency call Tuesday night in the Newport area.
Deputy Matthew Howell was traveling westbound on U.S. 70 about 11:20 p.m. when the collision occurred.
Howell was in stable condition at Vidant Medical Center Wednesday, and authorities in Carteret County continue to seek information on a vehicle that left the scene of the crash.
The investigation by the Highway Patrol was ongoing Wednesday.
According to information released by the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office, Howell had his blue lights and sirens activated en route to the emergency call, and was traveling in the outside lane attempting to pass two pickup trucks traveling in the inside lane.
The lead truck pulled over to the side of the road, as required by law, while the other truck moved to the outside lane into the path of the deputy.
