Cleveland, OH : Driver seriously injured when car crashes into highway column in Cleveland early Sunday, October 23, 2016

A 21-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he crashed his car into a concrete highway support column early Sunday in Cleveland.

The injuries the man suffered in the 3 a.m. crash under the Interstate 71 overpass do appear to be life threatening, police said.

The man's 2014 Volkswagen Jetta had been northbound on Ohio 176 when it went off the roadway near the West 14th Street and Interstate 90 split. The car traveled 500 feet on a dirt and grass embankment before it struck the concrete column, police said.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, police said.

Investigators did not say where the man is being treated for his injuries.
