Mohoning County, OH : Two people died, three injured in a three-vehicle crash on state Route 165 in Smith Township on Tuesday, March 15, 2016

A female driver and her male passenger were killed in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Courtney Road and state Route 165 in Smith Township on Tuesday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the victims’ car, traveling east on Courtney, failed to heed a stop sign and was hit by a sport utility vehicle going south on Route 165 at 10:51 a.m.

The female driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Mahoning County coroner’s representative. Her passenger, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Mercy Hospital in Canton, where he later died. The names of the victims were withheld late Tuesday pending notification of family.

After being hit, the car ran into a Hino box truck causing additional injuries.

The driver of the SUV, Alexis Drennen, 31, of Salem, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, and two juvenile passengers were transported to Salem Regional Health System, all for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Neither the driver of the Hino truck, Stephen Spears, 31, of East Cleveland, nor his passenger, Robert Thomas, 40, of Lyndhurst, were injured.

The patrol’s Canfield Post said alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. However, the patrol said events leading up to the crash remain under investigation.

Emergency medical technicians and rescue personnel from Sebring, Beloit and Damascus fire departments and Smith Township police assisted OSHP at the scene.
